TOP DOWN TOURS

Licenced and insured

Top Down Tours offers a variety of back country jeep and hiking adventures in the glorious West Kootenay mountains. These adventures include tours ranging from four to ten hours, with some being suitable for families. Our routes are flexible enough to be jeep sightseeing tours, or to combine jeeping with short or long hikes. Tell us your interests, and we'll tailor a tour for you!

Some of our
half to three-quarter day trips are briefly described here.
Please ask about other tours in this category.

Incredible 360 degree panoramas are accessed from Mt. Buchanan, above Kaslo, and Kootenay Lake lies at your feet. Idaho Peak, above the ghost town of Sandon, is famous world wide for its views and incredible displays of alpine flowers. Our trip into the Antoine Basin gives you a thrilling jeep ride, stops to explore the old mine and railway heritage, and a short alpine ridge hike where fabulous mountain views unfold. We can also take you to Cody Caves, where you can take the underground guided tour.

Full day tours/hikes. Please ask about other full day tours/hikes in this category.

The Antoine Basin gives easy access to alpine ridges. To hike these ridges above 7000 feet and perhaps to climb Mt. Reco is a wonderful full day trip. FromRetallack or Sandon a thrilling four wheel drive road gives access to the south ridge of Mt. Reco, and the ridges above the Jackson Basin. Views, flowers, and old mines entice one to spend the whole day exploring.

On the north side of Highway 31 from Retallack and The Valley of The Ghosts, there are two full day hikes. Lyle Lakes are situated in a beautiful alpine basin under the shoulder of Mt. Brennan. A little to the west is Whitewater Canyon. A long and spectacular hike leads to the glacier under Whitewater Peak, with the chance of grizzly bear sightings across the valley from the trail.

Monica Meadows , located to the north of Kaslo, is a real jewel of a hike, and well worth the long drive. Lovely meadows and alpine lakes, and the glacier views are almost indescribable. Other excellent hikes in this vicinity are Jumbo Pass and McBeth Icefield Trail.
In the Meadow Creek area, we offer two jeep tours, which can be combined with a little hiking, or a lot. Meadow Mountain is, as the name implies, mostly alpine meadows which are the setting for lovely rambles along the ridges and superb views of Mt. Cooper.

On the other side of the valley, Mt. Lavina hosts an old Forestry Lookout, from which one can see south down Kootenay Lake and north up Duncan Lake.

Highways and Byways Tours.

Let us do the driving and we'll take you on full day circle tours, visiting hot springs, old growth forests, and ghost towns. You can pack a lunch (or we'll arrange one for you), or eat at one of the restaurants on route.
